95 Squadron

John "Jack" Rixson

Went from No 422 to No 95 Squadron, based 100 miles south of Dakar at Bathurst (now Banjul), Gambia in Africa.

Jack Rixson"Jack" joined the RCAF in 1941, graduated as a pilot, posted overseas to 422 Squadron RCAF, in 1943, where he was united with Squadron member, his brother Charles was the 21 year old Captain of a Sunderland Flying boat, he was posted in 1944 to 95 Squadron, RAF, West Africa where he finished his operational tour.

Jack tells of one occasion when a standby crew replaced the scheduled patrol, as the hornets had built a large nest in his aircraft's cockpit. It hung from the overhead petrol levers.

The aircraft remained unserviceable for the day that it took to evict the stingers. The beautiful B.O.A.C. rest house on the ocean at Fajara beach, served as an R.& R. retreat.

It almost made the Gambia bearable!
